Wigan Walking Football Tournament – Vintage Celtic 3rd
The Wigan Walking Football Tournament was held on the 5th November 2015 at the Wigan Soccer Dome, Stadium Way, Wigan. 6 teams took part, Beechcroft, Man City A, Man City B, Vintage Celtic, Wigan A and Wigan B.
Vintage Celtic, in their new blue kit, started the Wigan Walking Football Tournament with a game against Wigan B. As is becoming Celtic’s normal start in tournaments it ended with a 2-0 defeat. Why are we always so slow to get going in tournaments?
The second game saw Celtic at last start playing with a comfortable 4-1 win over Man City B. This score could easily have been doubled with the chances Celtic had during the game. Man City A were next up and for the first 10 minutes Celtic looked the better side. Unfortunately a moments lack of concentration gave the City striker a chance and he took it to give them a 1-0 lead. After the goal Man City A never looked like losing and they added another goal to make the final score 2-0.
The fourth game saw Celtic play the Birmingham side Beechcroft. This match was a classic case of Celtic’s Jekyll and Hyde character with a truly awful defensive performance. Not long into the game and Beechcroft were 4-1 up. A defensive substitution was made and Celtic’s performance improved and 2 more goals came their way to make the score 4-3 to Beechcroft. Unfortunately, with Celtic looking likely to add further to their goal tally and at least draw the game, they ran out of time and it became the third defeat of the day.
The final game in the Wigan Walking Football Tournament saw Celtic matched against Wigan A, the team we beat in the final of July’s St Helens tournament. This proved to be Celtic’s best performance with some excellent movement, passing and defensive work and a defeat never looked likely. The outcome, although it could have been more, was a 1-0 win for Celtic. So it was played 5, won 2, lost 3 and to make the third place play off it all came down to goal difference. Celtic made the cut and Wigan B, who beat us 2-0 in the first game were our opponents. This was a hard fought battle against a Wigan side who’s players liked to dish out the physical contact but like a lot of others didn’t like having it dished back. The outcome was one Wigan player being sent off for violent conduct. Celtic gained revenge with a 2-0 win to gain a third place position.
The Wigan Walking Football Tournament proved to be a very physical affair and the standard of refereeing from one official left a lot to be desired.
Vintage Celtic need to improve the goal scoring side of their game with so many scoring chances being missed before a successful conversion is made. The other problem is that many of our skilful players cannot make mid week tournaments due to work commitments. We seem to raise our game against the better sides and lack the same determination against sides of a lower standard.
A big thank you to all who turned out today at the Wigan Walking Football Tournament, Tony Birtles, Derek Drabble, Dave Hardy, Bill Murney, Paul O’Neil, Dave Wilson, Barry Whitmore, Keith Whitmore and our stand in keeper Mike Kieran.
The next two events on the calendar in November are the MCFC Etihad league and the Cheshire Walking Football League.
