Walking Football Autumn Season 2017
The walking football Autumn season 2017 promises to be more competitive than ever with many new teams emerging and the existing ones gaining strength as newcomers join their ranks.
In the UK there are now over 1000 walking football clubs and the number is rising. Thankfully, the trend is now for the formation of age categories in leagues and cup tournaments and this is long overdue. We at Vintage Celtic had made the decision earlier this year that we would only enter Over 60’s competitions due to our experiences in the FA People’s Cup.
Fortunately this has been accepted by our members, and even the few that we have under 60, endorse the decision even if it means a wait of a year or so before they are eligible to compete again.
2017, the most successful season so far, in our almost 3 year existence, has seen us win 3 trophies to date. The Greater Manchester Over 60’s Walking Football Spring League was the first trophy to be added to our cabinet. Then followed the Cheshire Walking Football League Championship Spring League trophy. Finally the Life Leisure Stockport Tournament in June completed the trio.
Winning walking football competitions is becoming more difficult due to the influx of new players and the rising standards in the sport. Retaining championships is even harder due the fact that naturally other teams want your scalp. So it will be interesting to see how we fare in the walking football Autumn season 2017. With 7 winners trophies and 5 runners up awards, at least we have had a decent start to our history.
The Cheshire Walking Football League have decided to remain an over 50’s league, so until that outdated thinking alters we will no longer be part of the league. The Greater Manchester Walking Football League saw the demand for age categories in walking football last year and were the first in the country to form an Over 60’s league. The evidence for the demand for this age categorisation is witnessed by their need for 3 divisions in the walking football Autumn season 2017
We at Vintage Celtic have also seen more ladies wanting to join our walking football sessions. I wonder how long it will be before we have a Vintage Celtic Ladies walking football team, time will tell.
Vintage Celtic have decided to run a daytime session and this will be held on Fridays, 11:00-12:00 at the Stalybridge Celtic FC ground, Bower Fold, Mottram Road, Stalybridge, SK15 2RT. Everyone is welcome there are no restrictions on age, gender, fitness or ability. You will receive a warm welcome so come along and enjoy football at a slower pace.
