Welcome to new ‘lad’ Colin Cuthbert who has just joined us. At 74 Colin is superbly fit and covers a lot of ground in our football sessions. He is going to be a big asset in our over 60’s, 65’s and eventually over 70’s teams with his work rate and goal scoring abilities.
Welcome to new ‘lad’ Lee Taylor who attended last nights NCA session. Despite not having kicked a ball for 5 years Lee showed some good touches and you could see he had played before. Derek was particularly impressed as Lee joined us for a beer afterwards.

Our new Friday senior football session starts tomorrow 8th September at the Stalybridge Celtic FC ground, Bower Fold, Mottram Road, Stalybridge, 11am to 12 noon. Everyone welcome no matter what your ability.

Commencing Friday 8th September Vintage Celtic will be having a daytime session of walking football from 11am to 12 noon at the Stalybridge Celtic FC ground, Bower Fold, Mottram Road, Stalybridge, SK15 2RT.
There is no football on Monday 28th August due to the Bank Holiday. Active Copley as usual on Wednesday 30th August. We have booked tables at the Pho-Thong Thai Restaurant in Mossley for 7:30pm after training on Monday 4th September. Anyone not already down to go give me a call if you fancy it.
The Cheshire Walking Football league have decided to remain an over 50’s league. Consequently Vintage Celtic will have no further involvement unless they change their policy in the future.
Vintage Celtic midfielder Derek Drabble is considering a move to Spanish club San Miguel Strollers, yes they are a walking football club. Derek says despite his loyalty and long service to Vintage Celtic, the prospect of training and playing in the sun and a gallon of San Miguel a day may be too hard to turn down. We wish him well.
When asked to comment, the Lord Stamford management in Stalybridge said they were dismayed at the prospect.
Derek’s comment at the bottom of this page is repeated here –
“Whilst I gave serious consideration to the opportunity of playing in Spain and having an even more regular supply of San Miguel than I enjoy at the moment, I decided to finish my Walking Football career where I am”

Vintage Celtic won Division A in the league round robin stage of the Greater Manchester Walking Football League Rochdale Over 65’s Cup but were beaten in the semi-finals.
Vintage Celtic are competing in the Greater Manchester Walking Football League’s Rochdale Over 65’s Cup Tournament on Friday 9th June at the Heywood Sports Village. It’s going to be a difficult task as we are down to the bare bones with a squad of 7, due to 5 of our normal over 60’s squad being ineligible due to the age criteria and a few other regulars unavailable.
There is no training on Monday, 29th May due to New Charter Academy being closed for the Bank Holiday. Training as usual at Active Copley on Wednesday 31st May.

This statement has appeared on the Walking Football United website, at last people are beginning to realise the difference between Over 50’s and Over 60’s walking football. Although this was a late April Fool’s joke, there is many a true word spoken in jest.
Tomorrow, Friday 7th April, sees Vintage Celtic competing in the Greater Manchester Over 60’s Walking Football Spring League at the Heywood Sports Village. Paul O’Neil currently leads the Golden Boot Award for the top scorer by 3 goals.
Last nights 11-a-side training session was abandoned just after half time because of a serious injury to new lad Hughie Ives. No other player was involved and Hughie was taken to hospital by ambulance. We wish him all the best for a speedy recovery.
5 of our members played in the exhibition match at the National Football Museum in Manchester yesterday. Lost count of the score but both teams were cheered on by an appreciative crowd. An interesting tour of the museum followed.

The Stalybridge Walking Football Festival planned for Sunday, 9th April is cancelled. The pitch at Bower Fold is waterlogged. With a massive backlog of fixtures for Stalybridge Celtic FC in the National League North, there is no way we will be able to fit the tournament into the calendar before preparations are made by the groundsman to maintain the pitch in the close season.
Physical contact in walking football is still a controversial point. The new FA rules allow it and the WFU/WFA rules say it should be non-contact. Have a look at this excellent video by Dave Brooks of Rochdale AFC Strollers. Dave refereed us in the March session of the Greater Manchester Over 60’s Walking Football League. Great evenings training last night, 13th March. Two teams played out a well fought 2-2 draw, with some excellent refereeing by Brian Coll. What a difference that made, running pulled up immediately and very little physical contact.
Stalybridge Celtic FC are holding a Sportsman’s Dinner on Friday 21st April at the Premier Lounge, Audenshaw. John Hartson is the guest speaker. Tickets are £35, let’s support the club that supports us.

A big welcome to the two new lads at last night’s training session, Gary Hall and George Maitlend. Both showed that they have played to a decent level, with some fine touches, passing and awareness of the game. Also a belated welcome to the two Chris’s, Hardman and Trueman who joined us a few weeks ago.

Vintage Celtic are playing in the Greater Manchester Over 60’s Walking Football League this Friday, 3rd February.
We now have a Vintage Celtic Forum, especially for our members, although other interested parties can register and comment as long as the comments are not spam. If you have any suggestions on how we can improve what we do, any complaints or any thing you wish to discuss, this the place to do it.
The general opinion among our members is that our Wednesday training session at New Charter Academy is too late in the evening, so is now cancelled. We are trying to obtain an earlier slot for the Wednesday session which will probably be in 3 months time. Until then we will see you at our Monday session, same place 18:00-19:00.
In the meantime we are hoping to arrange some midweek friendlies to compensate and keep the regulars who look forward to the Wednesday session still involved in Tameside walking football with Vintage Celtic. Also see the new Vintage Celtic Forum.
The Vintage Celtic quiz team are improving. From coming bottom for many weeks, we have slowly risen to 3rd out of 7 at the Lord Nelson quiz night. Come and join us for a beer after training on Wednesday evenings.

Tameside Walking Football – Vintage Celtic’s ‘Shedders’ Gets a Mention. Good to see our own ‘Shedders’ being nominated for a place in the hypothetical England Walking Football Team. It won’t happen of course as the Leggy Mambo team will no doubt represent England but good to know we have been recognised. Cronus by the way is Eddie Gibson, manager of Leeds Titans.

The friendly this Saturday, 24th September, with Tameside Striders/Nash Amblers at Curzon Ashton has been cancelled. The reason given is that their team object to us changing the side at half time and leaving early in order to play at our Copley session.
Some good news – after a 2 month layoff the surfaces at Copley have now been relaid and as from this Saturday, 24th September, the traditional small sided football sessions will recommence at 15:00-16:00.

This Sunday, 11th September, Vintage Celtic will be taking part in the Martin Dawson Over 60’s Memorial Walking Football Tournament at Heywood Sports Village. 10 teams from Lancashire and Yorkshire are taking part. Good luck to the lads and bring back another trophy for the cabinet.
Some of the lads will be missing from training for a week due to holidaying in Benidorm, where visits to museums, churches, architectural delights and taking in the local culture will be on the agenda.
A great turnout for the first Wednesday evening training session last night. Cannot remember the score but think the bibs just edged it by a goal or two. Great to see Marcia on the score sheet. A big welcome also to new member Keith Burrows who has now joined the tournament squad.
This Saturday Vintage Celtic are taking part in the Older Persons Fun Day at Victoria Park in Denton 10:00-14:00. We will be showing people what walking football is all about and how it can transform their health and well-being.
It’s our first Wednesday evening training session at New Charter Academy tomorrow night at 20:00-21:00. No doubt we will be discussing the outcome at our HQ, the Lord Stamford, Stalybridge, afterwards.
Great game last night, 5th September at New Charter Academy. The Celtic All Stars went down 1-2 to the Bluevints. 2 very dubious goals by Stuart Greaves sealed the victory for the Vints in a tightly fought contest. Remember to always be magnanimous in defeat.

As from Wednesday 7th September, the morning training session at Medlock Leisure Centre, Droylsden is cancelled.
The session is moving permanently to a Wednesday evening session at New Charter Academy, Broadoak Road, Ashton-under-Lyne, 20:00-21:00. The Monday training session at NCA remains unchanged. See Training Venues for directions.

Excellent training session last night, Monday 22nd August, with a good turnout and a very tight game. The Celtic All Stars drew 1-1 with the Bluevints. Ian Molyneaux hit the goal for the All Stars early in the game and Mick Adams scored a well deserved equaliser for the Vints late in the game.

Great game tonight at New Charter Academy. The Celtic All Stars beat the Bluevints 5-4 in a very competitive game.
Paul O’Neil scored 4 great goals for the All Stars with a last minute winner thanks to a splendid through ball from veteran Bill Murney, the rock in the All Stars defence.
Vintage Celtic failed to reach the knockout stages in Saturday’s Leeds Walking Football Tournament. A win in the last game would have seen us top the league but unfortunately we went down 1-2 to a strong Leeds Titans team – report to follow. Training as usual tonight, 1st August at New Charter Academy, Broadoak Road, Ashton-under-Lyne, 18:00-19:00.
The Bluevints beat the Celtic All Stars 4-1 in tonight’s training session. Paul O’Neil grabbed 3 lucky goals and a miss hit by Mick Adams saw the vints victorious against a depleted All Stars side. Always remember to be gracious in victory and humble in defeat.
Next Saturday, 30th July, the Vintage Celtic squad are off to Leeds for the Jules Rimet 50th Anniversary Walking Football Tournament.
Hot day today playing walking football in the sun but we got through it OK thanks to breaking up play with some skill sessions and penalty shootouts. Nice to see Fiona from Tameside Age UK there taking an interest in what we do.
Great turnout at tonight’s training session at New Charter Academy. 9-a-side with some great skills on show. Celtic All Stars drew with the Bluevints 2-2. Paul O’Neil grabbed 2 for the vints and Pete Smith and Derek Drabble scored 2 excellent goals for the All Stars. A fabulous game played in the right spirit. A very warm welcome to Bill Harrison, another new recruit. After a warm training session we rehydrated afterwards in our HQ, the Lord Stamford, Stalybridge.
Another great, skills based training session run by Brian Coll today at Medlock Leisure Centre, Droylsden. Derek Drabble won the latest scratchcard prize – that’s 3 out of 5 he has won. Have we an optometrist in the club as Derek must wear x-ray glasses. On the plus side he did say he would fund the drinks at the Lord Stamford after Monday’s training session.
Today’s meeting with Tameside Age UK regarding the future of walking football in Tameside proved to be quite positive. More details to follow. Tameside Striders, another session provider in our area were also there. Run by Alan Richards they provide walking football in Denton on Tuesdays and Ashton-under-Lyne on Fridays.

Fantastic training session last night at New Charter Academy. Some fine skills on show in a tight game where the Celtic All Stars beat the Bluevints 2-1. A big welcome to the 2 new lads Bob and Derek. Golden Gordon struck again with a strike for the Bluevints but a goal from Derek Drabble sealed the win for the All Stars in the last few minutes.
Vintage Celtic failed in their bid to retain the Frodsham Walking Football Festival trophy being beaten 1-0 in the semi final by a very good Barnsley Leggy Mambo’s side, the walking football national champions for 2014 & 2015. Despite giving away a 10-12 year age gap the blue vints did themselves proud and were unfortunate not to take the tie to penalties. A great performance lads, you all did yourselves proud. The Mambo’s said we were the best side they faced. The Mambo’s beat Frodsham 3-1 in the final. See report
