Tameside Walking Football – Vintage Celtic Founded Almost 2 Years Ago
Tameside Walking Football and the areas first club representing the sport, Vintage Celtic, are now approaching 2 years of age. The club was founded by Stalybridge Celtic FC in 2014. Who would have thought at that time how much walking football would grow in such a short space of time?
Nationally, in November 2014 there were 88 clubs/venues participating in walking football. At the time of writing there are now 748 clubs/venues taking part. In our own area of Greater Manchester there are 48 clubs/venues, the largest number of any county in the country.
Tameside Walking Football is also well catered for with new clubs being formed in the borough. As well as Tameside’s original walking football club, Vintage Celtic, we have new clubs springing up from Curzon Ashton and Hyde United have recently announced a similar venture at their club. Although not in Tameside, nearby we also have walking football clubs from Manchester City, FC United and Stockport County and almost certainly more will follow.
It seems that these local non league clubs have seen the benefits that supporting this sport through the community has brought to their own organisations. No doubt more will follow their lead. Of course Stalybridge Celtic were the first to see the benefits of supporting Tameside Walking Football and decided to form Vintage Celtic WFC.
A mutual benefit has resulted, with Vintage Celtic appearing in walking football leagues and tournaments and bringing lots of recognition to their own club Stalybridge Celtic. Vintage Celtic have won a number of trophies including becoming winners of this years Algarve Walking Football Festival in Portugal.
Vintage Celtic have been in the forefront of promoting Tameside Walking Football and their 3 weekly sessions cater for all abilities and disabilities. If you would like to try walking football, and most that do become regulars, come and join us at one of our training sessions, you will receive a warm welcome.
