Celtic Found Short At The Cheshire Walking Football Spring Season
Celtic found short was the only conclusion from yesterday’s final session of the Cheshire Walking Football Spring League at the Cheshire FA HQ in Northwich. With a depleted squad and down to a bare minimum of 6 players it was always going to be an uphill task to overall leaders Northgate Strollers.
The first game was against a very physical Helsby Old Boys and Celtic kept a good formation and were very strong defensively. A late goal from a well struck shot by Dave Hardy sealed a 1-0 win for the Vints.
Next up came recently promoted Widnes who had never beaten Celtic in competition before. In this game it was definitely a case of Celtic found short as our formation was all over the place leaving too much space at the back. Widnes capitalised on this and had a few decent scoring chances but fortunately they couldn’t make them count.
Having said that Celtic hit the post twice and the final result deserved to be a draw instead of the 0-1 defeat due to an unfortunate goalkeeping error by Mike.
The final game was against the league leaders Northgate Strollers and the outcome was predictable. As expected a weak Celtic team was no match for the Strollers and a 0-2 scoreline could have been more. Oh to have our weekend team out against Northgate. This would definitely alter the state of play and we would be firm favourites to see them off.
The Spring season proved once again to be a very well organised affair played on great surfaces at a really excellent facility. Thanks to the lads who turned up and played today, Derek Drabble, Gordon Fenton, Dave Hardy, Mike Kieran, Paul O’Neil and Tony Wade.
We have come runners up twice now in this competition. With a little more commitment from our midweek squad hopefully we can improve at the Autumn sessions of the Cheshire Walking Football League.
